Tybee Island area guide

Back River

The west-facing waterfront edge of Tybee's north end — where the island looks out over Back River instead of the Atlantic. Waterfront and waterview homes, golden-evening sunsets, and paddling water at the end of the street, all a short walk from the calmest sand on the island.

The area

What Back River is like

Back River is the stretch of water along the northern tip of Tybee, and the neighborhood that takes its name from it. The streets here hold some of the island's most sought-after stays: elevated waterfront homes with porches aimed at the sunset, waterview cottages tucked behind the dune line, and quiet blocks where the main evening event is the color of the sky. You are minutes from the North Beach sand and the Light Station, but the rhythm is slower than either — this is the side of the island people choose for evening light, ospreys, and paddling rather than for pier crowds. If your trip is built around beach mornings and river sunsets, Back River is the match.

The sunsets

Because Back River faces west, this is one of the few places on Tybee where you watch the sun go down over water from your own porch. Evenings are the neighborhood's signature: golden light on the river, boats heading in, and long violet skies. Guests plan their days around getting back in time for it.

The water

Back River is paddling water as much as scenery. Calm conditions make it a natural fit for kayaks and paddleboards, and the waterfront streets put launches and views within a short walk. It is a different relationship with the water than the ocean side — flatter, quieter, and made for slow mornings on a board.

The pace

This end of the island never feels busy. The streets are residential, the traffic thins out past the Light Station, and the soundtrack is more herons and breeze than boardwalk. Travelers who found the pier end too lively on a past trip often end up here.

Getting around

Distances from Back River

Back River to the North Beach sand

Walk from the waterfront streets over the low dune line to the ocean-facing sand of the north end — the widest and calmest beach on the island, with the Light Station rising behind you.

5–10 minutes on footEasy — flat streets and a dune crossover

Back River to the Light Station

Walk to the Tybee Island Light Station and the old Fort Screven district at the top of the island. Climb the lighthouse in the morning before the midday crowds, then loop back along the quiet streets.

About 10 minutes on footEasy

Back River sunset walk

The neighborhood's own route: an unhurried evening walk along the waterfront streets as the light turns gold over the river. Bring a drink, take your time, and let the evening set the pace.

As long as the sunset lastsEasy — flat waterfront streets

Back River to the pier-end restaurants

Tybee's restaurants cluster at the pier end of the island. From Back River that is a drive or a bike ride rather than a stroll — most guests head south once a day and settle in otherwise.

Practical details

Coffee, groceries, parking, and getting around

Coffee

Casual coffee options are scattered along Butler Avenue and toward the south end; most Back River mornings start with coffee on the porch overlooking the water instead.

Grocery

The island's main grocery store sits near the south end of Tybee, a drive from Back River. Plan a grocery run on your way in from Savannah rather than after you settle.

Parking

Tybee enforces paid parking island-wide. Most Back River house rentals include driveway or off-street parking for the house itself — confirm the vehicle count before booking, because street parking for extra cars is metered.

Getting around

There is no island shuttle. Back River runs on walking, bikes, golf carts, and short drives. Rideshares reach the island from Savannah but expect a wait for the return trip.

Honest trade-offs

What to know before you book

Back River is Tybee’s sunset side. That comes with specific logistics worth knowing about before you commit.

The sunset side, not the surf side

Back River homes look west, which means the ocean-facing sand is a short walk away rather than at your back door. If stepping straight from the deck onto the beach is the priority, an oceanfront unit in North Beach fits better. If the trade is sunset views over water for a dune walk to the sand, this is the trade made in your favor.

You will drive to dinner

The island's restaurant scene sits at the pier end, and Back River is at the far end from it. Plan on a daily drive or bike ride for dinners out, and treat the neighborhood itself as the place you linger — mornings on the water, evenings on the porch.

Limited inventory, real differences

Waterfront and waterview homes here are few, and they vary widely in stairs, decks, and how directly they face the water. Availability changes week to week, so book early and read the property details carefully before committing.

Questions to ask about any Back River rental

  • Does the rental face the water directly, or is the river view partial or between houses?

  • How many stairs lead to the entrance and living areas, and is that workable for everyone in the group?

  • Exactly how far is the walk to the nearest beach crossover on the ocean side, and is the path manageable with beach gear?

  • How many parking spaces does the rental include, and does that cover every vehicle in the group?

  • Is the deck or porch positioned for the sunset, or is it shaded and screened for bug control?

  • Are kayaks or paddleboards included, or is there a nearby rental option for the days you want to paddle?
