The heart of beach-town Tybee
Everything the island is known for — the pier, the pavilion, fried shrimp, souvenir shops, surf rentals — clusters within a few blocks of the south end.
Tybee Island · South end
Tybee's liveliest beach area centers on the pier and pavilion at the foot of Tybrisa Street — restaurants, shops, arcades, and the island's busiest stretch of sand, with condo buildings and cottages steps from it all.
The area
South Beach is the Tybee most people picture: the pier reaching over the Atlantic, the 1930s pavilion behind it, and Tybrisa Street's shops and restaurants a block inland. The beach here is wide and lively, lifeguards work the summer season, and the island's best concentration of dining and entertainment sits within a five-minute walk. Condo communities like DeSoto Beach Club, Sandpiper, Brass Rail Villas, 17th Place, and Captain's Watch put you close enough to walk to dinner and the pier at sunrise. This is the right end of the island for travelers who want the beach town energy — and the honest trade-off is crowds and noise in peak season.
Everything the island is known for — the pier, the pavilion, fried shrimp, souvenir shops, surf rentals — clusters within a few blocks of the south end.
South Beach is the only area of Tybee where you can genuinely park the car and walk to restaurants, ice cream, and live music all week.
Summer days bring lifeguards, volleyball, and families on the sand; evenings bring the pier lights and music drifting off Tybrisa Street.
On foot
Walk out the pier for the dolphin-and-fishing-boat view, circle the pavilion, then work along Tybrisa Street past the shops and restaurants. This loop is the island in miniature.
At low tide the firm sand between South Beach and the lighthouse at the north end is one of the great beach walks on the Georgia coast — roughly two miles of shoreline the whole way.
After dinner, the pier under its lights is a Tybee ritual — anglers on the rails, the pavilion glow behind you, and the sound of the surf below.
Practical details
South Beach has the island's best coffee options within walking distance — a couple of cafés and bakeries open early on Tybrisa Street and adjacent blocks in season.
The island's main grocery is a short walk or two-minute drive from the pier area, which makes South Beach the easiest end of Tybee for stocking a condo kitchen.
Paid parking is enforced island-wide and the pier-area lots fill earliest in summer. Confirm whether your rental includes a parking pass before you book.
No public transit on the island — you will want a car for the 30-minute drive from Savannah, though a South Beach stay itself can be mostly car-free once you arrive.
Honest trade-offs
South Beach is the most convenient and most energetic part of Tybee Island. That energy is the whole point — and it has a cost. These trade-offs help you decide if it is the right fit.
June through August, the pier beach is the busiest stretch on the island. Expect a full sand line by late morning and busy evenings on Tybrisa.
Rentals near the bar-and-restaurant blocks hear live music and porch crowds late into summer evenings. Street-side units are louder than interior courts and upper floors.
Many south-end condos are one- and two-bedroom units. Large groups often book multiple units or look at cottages instead — ask what combination fits your party.
The pier lots are the first to fill on summer weekends. A rental with a guaranteed parking pass matters more at South Beach than anywhere else on the island.
Before you book
Exactly how many blocks is the unit from the pier and the beach access?
Is the unit street-facing on a nightlife block, or set back on a quieter court?
Does the rental include a Tybee parking pass, and for how many vehicles?
Which floor is the unit on, and is there an elevator?
Is the balcony or deck private, and does it face the ocean, the street, or an interior courtyard?
