3 days in Savannah: the first-timer's itinerary

This itinerary covers the Historic District's essential squares, the riverfront, Forsyth Park, and a handful of the city's best restaurants — with enough open time to follow what looks interesting.

Day 1

Arrive and find your square

  • MorningCheck in and walk to your nearest square. Sit for a few minutes before doing anything else. This is how Savannah is supposed to start.
  • MiddayWalk Bull Street from Forsyth Park north through the squares to City Hall. Stop at Forsyth's fountain, then continue through Monterey, Madison, and Chippewa squares.
  • AfternoonVisit the Savannah History Museum or the Telfair Museums' Jepson Center for a grounding in the city's story before dinner.
  • EveningDinner in the Historic District. Reserve ahead for a marquee restaurant, or walk until something looks right.
Day 2

The riverfront and the squares

  • MorningCoffee and a slow morning. Walk to River Street along the Factor's Walk ramp and spend an hour on the waterfront before the crowds arrive.
  • MiddayLunch on or near River Street, then walk back through the eastern squares — Warren, Washington, Columbia — which see fewer visitors than the Bull Street corridor.
  • AfternoonVisit the Owens-Thomas House or the Mercer Williams House for a close look at Savannah's domestic architecture and social history.
  • EveningEvening walk through the squares as the light changes. Dinner in the southern Historic District or the Victorian District.
Day 3

Forsyth, Starland, and a slow departure

  • MorningForsyth Park in the morning — the fountain, the café, and a long walk under the oaks. If it is Saturday, the farmers market runs along the park's edge.
  • MiddayWalk south into the Starland District for lunch at one of its independent restaurants. Browse the studios and vintage shops on the way back.
  • AfternoonA final walk through your favorite square before heading home.

A romantic Savannah weekend

Savannah is one of the most naturally romantic cities in the South. This itinerary leans into the city's slower pace, its best restaurants, and the moments that happen between the planned stops.

Day 1

Arrive, settle, and wander

  • AfternoonArrive and check into a historic home or garden apartment in the Historic District. Take an hour to settle before going anywhere.
  • Late afternoonWalk the southern squares — Monterey, Calhoun, Whitefield — as the afternoon light softens. These are quieter than the central corridor and particularly beautiful in the late afternoon.
  • EveningDinner at a restaurant you have reserved ahead. Savannah's best tables book out on weekends — plan this before you arrive.
  • NightAn evening walk along the riverfront or through the lit squares. Savannah at night is worth staying up for.
Day 2

A slow morning and the best of the city

  • MorningA slow breakfast at the rental or at a nearby café. No agenda before 10am.
  • MiddayVisit Bonaventure Cemetery — one of the most atmospheric places in the South. Bring a map and allow two hours.
  • AfternoonReturn to the city for a late lunch in the Starland District, then browse the galleries and shops on your way back.
  • EveningA final dinner in the Historic District before departing the next morning.
