City Market & Ellis Square: Savannah at its most alive

The entertainment heart of the Historic District — open-air market blocks, Ellis Square's fountains, and a five-minute walk to the riverfront. The most convenient downtown location, with a nightlife tempo to match.

Historic downtown Savannah after dark near City Market

The area

The neighborhood

City Market occupies a cluster of restored warehouse blocks between Bryan and Congress Streets, with Ellis Square — fountains, benches, and families cooling off in summer — at its door. From here, nearly everything on a first-visit itinerary is walkable: River Street and the riverfront in five minutes, Johnson Square and the banking district steps away, Broughton Street's shops around the corner. Vacation rentals in this pocket skew toward condos above the market blocks and townhomes on the surrounding streets. It is the choice for travelers who want to step out the door into the middle of things — bars, music, tours departing nearby, and the constant hum of downtown Savannah.

The center of everything

This is the most convenient rental location in Savannah — riverfront, Broughton Street shopping, and the squares all within a ten-minute walk.

Live seven days a week

Street performers, gallery nights, horse-drawn tours, and the market's restaurants and bars keep this pocket active from morning to late evening.

Ellis Square as your front yard

The square's interactive fountains are a magnet for kids in summer, and its benches catch river breezes in the evening — an unusually sociable square.

Practical details

Coffee, groceries, parking, and transit

Coffee

Cafés on Broughton Street and around City Market open early and are steps from most rentals in this pocket — the easiest coffee-in-a-bathrobe part of downtown.

Grocery

There is no full grocery store in the core. Small markets and pharmacies cover essentials; for a real grocery run, drive or rideshare five to ten minutes out of the district.

Parking

Several city parking garages sit within a few blocks, and many rentals include garage access or a pass. Street parking downtown is scarce and metered — do not count on it.

Transit

The free DOT shuttle loops through downtown with stops near the market and along the riverfront. For most guests here, walking covers everything and transit is a bonus.

Honest trade-offs

What to know before you book

City Market is the most convenient rental location in Savannah — and the loudest. If you want the middle of everything, these trade-offs tell you what that actually means after dark.

It is loud at night

This is the nightlife core. Live music, street crowds, and pedicabs run late, especially Thursday through Saturday. Light sleepers should look at interior or courtyard-facing units.

Fewer homes, more condos

The pocket is mostly condos and converted commercial buildings rather than the porched historic homes of the residential squares. Expect compact, vertical layouts.

Grocery logistics

No full grocery store nearby. For a family staying a week, the drive-to-shop reality is worth knowing before you commit to the core.

Peak rates

Convenience commands a premium — nightly rates here often run higher than equally walkable streets one neighborhood over.

Questions to ask about any City Market rental

  • Does the unit face the street, an interior courtyard, or the square — and how does that affect nighttime noise?

  • Is parking included with the rental, and in which garage?

  • What floor is the unit on, and is there an elevator in the building?

  • Are windows original single-pane or updated — will the street noise carry at midnight?

  • Is the building above a bar or restaurant, and what are its quiet hours?
