Tybee Island area guide

Mid Beach

Tybee's central beach — the residential middle of the island between the lighthouse end and the pier end. Mid Beach trades walk-to-dinner convenience for quieter sand, cottage streets, and easy access to both ends of the island by bike or a short drive.

The area

What Mid Beach is like

Mid Beach is the stretch of Tybee between the busy ends — north of the pier's restaurant scene, south of the lighthouse crowds. The streets here are mostly residential: painted cottages, elevated homes with parking underneath, and beach crossovers at numbered streets that lead straight onto wide sand. It is the island at its most local. Guests who stay here bike to both ends, walk to the beach in minutes, and treat the island like a neighborhood rather than a destination. For families and repeat visitors, this middle ground is often the sweet spot — central by car, quiet by nature.

The sand

The central beach is broad and noticeably calmer than the pier end. Crossovers at the numbered streets spread visitors out, so even in season the sand never feels as packed as the pavilion area. Sunrises over the Atlantic here are the reason early risers choose Tybee.

The streets

Mid Beach is cottage country — pastel homes on small lots, screened porches, outdoor showers for sandy feet, and elevated houses with parking below. Rentals are mostly houses rather than condos, which makes this the stretch for groups who want porch space and a kitchen.

The middle position

Nothing on Tybee is more than a few minutes from Mid Beach: the pier and restaurants to the south, the lighthouse and Fort Screven to the north, and the Back River sunset side just west. Bikes and golf carts are the local way to cover the island.

Mid Beach to South Beach

Walk or bike south along the beach-side streets to the pier, pavilion, and Tybrisa Street restaurants. Biking takes about five minutes; on foot it is a pleasant twenty-to-twenty-five-minute beach-adjacent walk.

Practical details

Coffee, groceries, parking, and getting around

Coffee

Casual coffee options are scattered along Butler Avenue and toward both ends of the island; most Mid Beach mornings start with coffee on the porch instead. South Beach's cafés are a short drive or bike ride.

Grocery

The island's main grocery store sits near the south end of Tybee, a few minutes' drive from Mid Beach. Plan a grocery run on your way in from Savannah rather than after you settle.

Parking

Tybee enforces paid parking island-wide. Most Mid Beach house rentals include driveway or off-street parking for the house itself — confirm the vehicle count before booking, because street parking for extra cars is metered.

Getting around

There is no island shuttle. Mid Beach runs on walking, bikes, golf carts, and short drives. Rideshares reach the island from Savannah but expect a wait for the return trip.

Honest trade-offs

What to know before you book

Mid Beach is the island at its most local. That comes with specific logistics worth knowing about before you commit.

Not walk-to-dinner

Tybee's restaurants cluster at the pier end, and Mid Beach is a drive, bike, or long walk from them. If evenings out on foot are the heart of your trip, South Beach fits better. If porch dinners and beach mornings are the point, this is the trade made in your favor.

Distance to the sand varies

"Mid Beach" covers many blocks, and a rental five blocks from the crossover is a different stay than one across the street from the dunes. Ask exactly how far the crossover is and whether the path is paved or sandy.

Butler Avenue traffic

Butler Avenue, the island's main spine, carries seasonal beach traffic and moves quickly in stretches. Houses on the avenue hear it; houses a block off do not. Ask which your rental is.

Before you book

Questions to ask about any Mid Beach rental

  • Exactly how far is the rental from the nearest beach crossover, and in which direction?

  • Is the house on Butler Avenue itself or on a quiet side street?

  • How many vehicles can park at the house, and is overflow parking metered nearby?

  • Are the beach access paths from this street paved boardwalk or soft sand?

  • Does the house have an outdoor shower or rinse station for sandy feet?

  • Is the ocean visible from any part of the house, or is this an interior cottage street?
